Air Testing Device

Tester for mine damp/oxygen. It originally belonged to Percy Blight a Teesdale Mine Manager. A small candle stub was placed at the top of the wooden stick and this was then pushed through the glass to the top of the tube and then lit. The handle was pulled slowly down the tube and the point at which the candle was extinguished indicated the level of damp gas or oxygen.
