Spar box William Ridley

Spar grotto made by William Ridley of Allenheads c.1875. The grotto is set in a very fine wooden case, fitted with carrying handles on the sides and top, suggesting it was carried around local shows. The display consists of walls of minerals to the back, sides, top and bottom of the case, a solid mineral column to the left and a mineral "stalagmite" and "stalagtite" to the right. Behind these are angled mirrors, giving extra depth to the display. Minerals used include: galena, quartz, flourite, sphalerite, including some very large, impressive crystals. The scene is complemented by the presence of five carved and painted figures of miners, complete with tools, who are busy working in this beautiful, glittering landscape.
