Bucking Hammer


Rectangular cast steel flat hammer shafted with wooden handle. Hammer face has a convex surface. Indistinct numbers or letters cast into top face of hammer. Dated 1960-1970 Used for preparing samples of silica rock at Refrectory Brick Works of Consett Iron Company, Templetown. The name bucking hammer is thought to refer to the rocking or bucking movement of the hammer when crushing or grinding samples.
